| Drawings which are to scale are a must for accurate rendition of artwork which is confined to architectural space limitations and code requirements. Our local code for railings is basically divided into two requirements. If the design uses straight pickets, a 4" opening rule applies. If on the other hand, the design is freeform or curvilinear, then the 6" opening rule applies. With these design restrictions in mind, I then begin to incorporate the "pond theme" into the design. Using a 5 1/2" circle as a measuring device for the code requirement, the water lines begin to take shape. The placement of the dragonfly and cattails are not only for design aesthetics, but crucial for meeting code requirements. Duplication of the dragonfly and rescaling it is another good reason for using computers for digital designs. The railings on this drawing will ultimately be fully scaled and printed for use as a working template prior to fabrication. The next page will also show how to take this existing scaled drawing and skew it to fit to the perspective drawing. |
