Antiquing Brass Plates

Cleaning antique brass

Applying antique brass patina

Detail below shows partial color change due to the chemical reaction caused by the aplication of the chemical antiquing solution

To get a consistent antique bronze look to the freshly cut brass plates we have to go through a procedure of cleaning, pickling, and grinding, prior to the application of a commercially mixed chemical solution which will darken the brass plates. This procedure is time consuming due to the amount of labor required for each of the steps.

Procedure:

  • Clean grease, oils, contaminants
  • Abrasive cleaning of edges & surface
  • Pickling to remove oxides
  • Apply chemical antiquing solution
  • Hand burnish / remove excess coloring and blend color
  • Seal color with paste wax

Note that the new antique bronze coloring will age and darken over time as it is exposed to the outdoor elements.
