An arc is first struck on the base metal and the rod is introduced after a molten puddle is established. I use a "walking the cup" procedure for depositing the weld metal. The cup of the torch which dispenses argon is laid directly onto the base metal. The tungsten tip which is creating the arc is then directed to the top and brought down to the bottom of the weld in a figure 8 motion. The results are quite beautiful when done correctly. Pictured here are some additional coloration marks which occurred during the cooling down of the molten metal. This coloration will be removed with a stainless wire brush after all welds have been completed, because if left on, corrosion will likely occur on the surface of the weld due to the burning of the chromium content during the welding process. Once the top is completely welded, the vertical sides and center sections are added. The final grinding and wire brushing are done before adding the brass plates. |
