Cleaning Solder Joint

Once the solder joint has had some time to cool down, a 60 grit flap disc impregnated with zirconium is used to remove the excess solder and flux.

I then go over the same joint with a finer 3M Scotch Brite pad. This abrasive smoothes out the scratches left behind by the more aggressive zirconium wheel.

The last stage of abrasive cleaning on the solder joint is the use of a coarse grade hand pad. Working the grain over the completed area gives the adjacent areas a consistent look so that the application of the antique black patina will blend over the entire area.
